CPC meaning in marketing
By Oliver Wakefield-Smith, Digital Signet. Updated July 2026.
CPC is cost per click: the price of one visitor from an ad. This page assumes zero vocabulary and defines every term as it appears. It is the onboarding page for the junior marketer staring at a new dashboard.
CPC = spend / clicks · PPC is the channel, CPC is its price
PPC (pay per click) names the way ads are bought. CPC measures what each click cost. You run PPC; you pay a CPC. Google Ads Help, definition
Where it shows up in your dashboard
In Google Ads it is the "Avg. CPC" column: cost divided by clicks for whatever date range you are viewing. Meta reports "CPC (cost per link click)" and a separate all-clicks version that counts likes and expands as clicks; know which one you are reading before comparing anything. The number moves daily because every click is priced by its own auction.
Why CPC matters more on a small budget
CPC is the exchange rate between money and attention. On £500 a month, a £2.50 CPC buys 200 visits; a £5.00 CPC buys 100. Halving your CPC doubles your traffic without spending a penny more, which is why the levers on how to lower CPC are worth more to a small account than any budget increase. For scale: the average Google search CPC across industries in 2026 is $5.42 LocaliQ, 2026 data.
The metrics you need alongside it
