In healthcare, CPC means Certified Professional Coder: a credential issued by the AAPC, the American professional body for medical coders. Unrelated to advertising. This page explains the credential and routes you to the AAPC for anything you would act on.
What a CPC-certified coder does
Medical coders read clinical documentation, a consultation note, an operative report, and translate it into standardised codes that insurers and health systems use for billing and records. The CPC credential certifies proficiency in that translation for physician-office settings. It is the AAPC's flagship certification AAPC, certification page.
The exam and what it costs
Certification is by examination, covering code sets (CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS), anatomy, and coding guidelines. The AAPC updates exam format and pricing periodically, so we do not print a fee here; the current price, format and any bundled study requirements are on the AAPC CPC certification page. Treat any fee quoted on a third-party site, including a cached copy of this one, as stale until checked there.
Is it worth it?
The honest answer: it is the recognised entry credential for a medical-coding career in the US, and the AAPC publishes its own salary survey data for certified coders on its site.
